Tonbridge Angels manager Alan Dunne wants to add an extra training session to boost players’ fitness
Tonbridge manager Alan Dunne is looking into the possibility of adding an extra training session.
Angels currently train two nights a week, which leaves them at a disadvantage compared with many National League South rivals.
The division is increasingly heading towards full-time status and Dunne believes his side would benefit from adding a third session.
He felt they looked leggy in last weekend’s FA Cup exit against Chatham, who are full-time in the Isthmian Premier, a level below Tonbridge.
Reflecting on the 3-1 defeat, additional training is on the new manager’s agenda as he settles into life at Longmead.
“There’s lots of learning to take from it, I’ve got some work to do,” said Dunne.
“I knew that when I took this job it would be difficult and I knew there was going to be some work to be done.
“I need to add some players, I need to try and get another day’s training in the players, so I can get them fitter and a bit more conditioned.
“They’re all things I’m working on behind the scenes.”
Tonbridge return to league action at home to Horsham this Saturday (3pm).
That’s followed by Maidenhead away on Tuesday (7.45pm).
Dunne is keen to move on from the Chatham defeat after Tonbridge missed out on a place in the first round.
It was a first defeat in nine games in all competitions - four of those matches coming under ex-boss Craig Nelson - so there’s no need to get too down.
“It’s football,” said Dunne, whose side are 15th in the table.
“I said to the players, be disappointed because I’m disappointed for you all, I’m gutted for you all, because I think you deserved more out of it.
“But you only get one chance at it.
“Bottle it up, take it, learn from it and we’ll have a look at why the second half we started a little bit
