Todd Boehly 'exploring options' to sell Chelsea as breakdown in relations throws club's future in turmoil

Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital are reportedly mulling over their options, just over two years after they took over the club.

According to a recent report from Bloomberg, the two parties are contemplating whether they can buy each other out following a fallout between Boehly and Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali. A series of disagreements have led to a strained relationship, leaving the future of the Blues uncertain. Boehly, who also owns the Los Angeles Dodgers as part of the Guggenheim Baseball Management consortium, initially stepped up as sporting director when they first bought the club.

However, over the past two years, he has gradually taken a backseat as the club committed to revamping its recruitment staff. In the last six months, Boehly has distanced himself from the daily management of the club, with Eghbali now considered the most influential figure at Stamford Bridge.

The Boehly-Clearlake consortium purchased Chelsea from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in a £4.25billion deal. Clearlake holds more than 60 per cent of the club, with Boehly, US businessman Mark Walter and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss owning the remainder, reports the Mirror.

The Blues missed out on qualification for the Champions League last season after finishing sixth in the Premier League and have had to settle for European football in the form of the Conference League. New manager Enzo Maresca has spent over £200million in the transfer market while allowing key men such as Raheem Sterling and Conor Gallagher to leave.
