TJ Doheny set for undisputed title bout against Naoya Inoue in Japan

Irish fighter TJ Doheny will fight for the undisputed super bantamweight championship after it was confirmed that he will take on defending champion Naoya Inoue in September.

Former IBF super-bantamweight title holder Doheny will get the chance to regain the belt he held until 2019 along with the WBA, WBC and WBO editions of the title when the two meet in Japan on 3 September.

The 37-year-old Portlaoise fighter comes into bout on the back of three straight wins as he looks to rebuild following a period of some big defeats.

Doheny lost his IBF title to Daniel Roman in 2019 and suffered three losses in his next five fights, including a unanimous decision defeat to Michael Conlan in Belfast.

Inoue, fighting in his home country, has never lost a professional fight and with a record of 27-0, with 24 knockouts, Doheny will be up against it.

Inoue stopped Mexican fighter Luis Nery in front of 55,000 fans at the Tokyo Dome in May and while he's expected to win against Doheny, he's taking nothing for granted.

"Being able to fight at the Tokyo Dome was a special match for me in my career as a boxer, and I feel that I have surpass that performance with this next fight," he said.

"Doheny has had some really good fights recently and I don't want to take my eye off the ball.

"He has knocked out boxers who I have sparred with, and he can produce the goods in his fights."
