Title defence could 'open doors' for East Kilbride boxer as he prepares for Hydro bout

East Kilbride boxer David Jamieson could open some major doors if he successfully defends his IBO Intercontinental title against England’s Dec Spelman.

Jamieson’s coach, Gerry Higgins, has hinted that a title fight could be in the pipeline for the 30-year-old, should he overcome a challenger who has 17 wins from 22 fights, when they clash at the Hydro on Friday, May 13.

But while Higgins says Jamieson is respectful of that, he also points out that his man has the same number of KOs from fewer fights.

Higgins said: “This is a really good 50-50 fight. Dec Spelman is a lot more experienced than Davie, he’s had 22 fights, won 17 and lost five, but he’s been in with Lyndon Arthur, Anthony Yarde and Zach Peters as well, who are all top light-heavyweights.

“He’s moved to cruiserweight to challenge Davie for his title.

“It’s a definite test for the big yin, Dec has a different skill-set than Samo Jangirov [who Davie beat to win his title], and has held titles, so he has a decent record.

“For Dec’s 17 wins, his KO stats are the same as Davie’s, they’re both on five, but Davie has had eight wins, so it shows the difference in power.

“The cruiserweight division is red hot just now. Davie is sitting at number 10 just now, and with his power and being a bigger and stronger guy, you’ve got to fancy him.”

And Higgins added: “We know we’re in for a tough night and a tough test.

“I reckon this will push him in to bigger and better things, maybe another title fight, but I can’t let the cat out of the bag too much on that.”

Jamieson’s big fight will be live on FightZone as part of the undercard for Hannah Rankin’s double world title defence.
