Timing of controversial All-Star tour a camogie 'own goal' - Murray

Former Cork goalkeeper Aoife Murray says the Camogie Association scored an "own goal" in the scheduling of the controversial All-Stars tour, while also lamenting communication to the players.

The proposed All-Star trip to Canada has been making headlines for the wrong reasons after seven Cork players said they will not take part due to scheduling conflicts.

The tour is set to take place between 19-25 May, just one week before the start of the All-Ireland Championship, which kicks-off on the first weekend of June.

Cork players Katrina Mackey and Aisling Thompson were among those highly critical of the timing, and speaking on 2fm's Game On, nine-time All-Ireland winner and seven-time All-Star recipient Murray said the decision by the association was a poor one.

It showed a bit of disrespect to the provincial championships

"My initial reaction was brilliant, the All-Star trip is back," she said.

"Once you start to look into it, and the dates, all that positivity turned to disappointment very quickly

"Trying to wedge something so important – it is meant to be a reward for the top players in those two years - between league and championship was probably a no-go from the start.

"It showed a bit of disrespect to the provincial championships. I know they aren’t national comps and run by provincial councils themselves, but as a Munster woman, I know how important the provincial championships are.

"The time of the year is wrong. It should be at the end of the club season when players can let their hair down and enjoy themselves.

"Wedging it between league and championship, without any consultation with the players it seems, was a bit of an own goal on the camogie’s side."
