Tiernan Kelly: Goal proved a catalyst in Armagh comeback

Armagh's Tiernan Kelly was all too aware of the impact his goal had in the outcome of the Orchard County's draw against Galway at Markievicz Park.

Armagh recorded a 1-12 to 0-15 draw against the Tribesmen which propelled them to the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals, with Kelly's major contribution acting as a turning point.

Connor Gleeson's botched kickout was seized upon by Conor Turbitt, who offloaded to the marauding Clann Éireann clubman for a close-range score which reduced Armagh's arrears to a single point at 1-09 to 0-13.

"It was a bit of a momentum swing," Kelly said in his post-match interview with RTÉ Sport. "Our energy dropped for a while, and I think they went up by five. I was just glad to be on the end of it.

"There was the turnover, and it was a terribly good pass, and it was a good team goal.

"When you get opportunities like that you have to take them, especially against Galway. I don't think they'd conceded a goal this year.

"When you get an opportunity like that around the penalty area, you have to just pull on it and hope that it goes in."

While Galway face a preliminary quarter-final next weekend, Armagh can look forward to some much-needed downtime.

"I'm looking forward to a break," Kelly admitted. "Hopefully we get a few days, get the bodies healed and get a few boys back from injury, and we'll go again in the quarter-final."

Galway boss Padraic Joyce expressed mixed emotions after the final whistle and said: "We're disappointed that we didn't get the [result] we needed.

"We got the draw, obviously but we were probably the better team all the way through. We didn't close the game out unfortunately and left Armagh the game, gifted them 1-01 or 1-02.
