Three things that could stop Harry Kane from signing for Manchester United this summer

Harry Kane's move from Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester United would be a real Premier League throwback.

This is how the league worked during the ‘golden years’ before United spluttered and struggled for a decade. Fans of sides who finished out of the top spots got to enjoy their shiniest player for a few seasons before they were dazzled by the bright lights of Sir Alex Ferguson’s United.

There's a myriad of reasons why this does not really happen anymore: Fergie left in 2013, the Glazers have invested poorly, no manager since Ferguson has been able to settle and United have not challenged for titles or been able to guarantee Champions League football.

If Kane were to move to United, it would be perhaps the best sign yet that Erik ten Hag will bring the good times back to Old Trafford. But there are still plenty of reasons why United might not get their man...

Contract talks between Tottenham and Kane were planned after the January transfer window. Since then, Spurs have endured a string of poor results in the league, defeat to Sheffield United in the FA Cup and a meek exit to AC Milan in the Champions League.

Antonio Conte got himself sacked, Fabio Paratici left the club and Spurs have imploded on the pitch, shipping a combined total of 10 goals in the first half of their last three games.

Whilst this season has been another failure for the north London club, Kane might be persuaded to stay if he approves of the next managerial appointment. Unconfirmed reports suggest he had a say in the appointments of Jose Mourinho and Conte. Daniel Levy might be inclined to give Kane more of a say in the manager hunt this summer if he wants to guarantee
