Three issues driving Cristiano Ronaldo's desire to leave Manchester United

Manchester United's inactivity in the transfer market and a salary reduction are among the issues that have convinced Cristiano Ronaldo to try and seek a move away from the club.

Although United are closing in on the signings of Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen, Ronaldo has grown impatient with their response to a disastrous season that they finished trophyless and were demoted to the Europa League.

United's failure to qualify for the Champions League has also triggered a 25% reduction on players' salaries, which sources close to Ronaldo say has "upset" the player.

Ronaldo agreed a £480,000-a-week contract when he rejoined United and his basic weekly wage for the forthcoming season is now £360,000.

Despite Ronaldo's desire to leave United after only a year, some dressing room sources still believe he will stay at the club while United figures doubt there is an obvious buyer for Ronaldo.

Senior United sources reiterated at the weekend Ronaldo is still not for sale. He has been linked with Chelsea, who have loaned Romelu Lukaku back to Inter Milan, and Bayern Munich, braced for Robert Lewandowski's potential departure to Barcelona.

Ronaldo, 37, was the only international not to report back for pre-season at United's Carrington training complex on Monday due to "family reasons". The club said they accepted his explanation.

Ronaldo is under contract until next year and United have the option of an additional year to tie the Portuguese to the club until 2024.
