Threave Rovers take the "handbrake off" with thumping win over Vale of Leven

It was “handbrake off” time for Threave Rovers as they thrashed Vale of Leven on Saturday.

The Castle Douglas side ran out 4-0 winners to leapfrog their rivals and take second place in the West of Scotland League third division.

Caretaker boss Paul McGinley (far right) said: “It was end-to-end, it was non-stop – we loved it.

“It was handbrake off, put it in forward gear and go for it.

“They were brave right from the first whistle – they left three up top, we did the same and just went toe-to-toe.

“They were a very aggressive team in every aspect, they were highly competitive and there was a physical edge to the game but we embraced it. We can mix it as well, we won our one v one duels, and our four goals were scored from the six yard box area which you don’t see very often at our level.

“We’re trying to adapt to every aspect of the game – if the park’s good and we can play proper football we will. If the parks are heavy and they’re cutting up and it’s a physical game we’ll adapt to it.

“It doesn’t matter what it is, the lads understand we’ll try to adapt to everything.”

Dylan Cairnie opened the scoring for Threave after 25 minutes and he doubled the advantage from close range just before the break. Tam Coles headed in the killer third late on before bagging the fourth in the dying seconds.

McGinley said: “We had good chances throughout, it wasn’t as if we only had a good spell in the game. We always feel we can create and score at any minute of the game. We had big chances before that, it wasn’t as if it was four chances and four goals, we had 17 shots on target.

“There were some great phases of play and strikers in the right area at the right time.
