Threave Rovers caretaker gaffer hoping hectic end to the season ends for promotion

Threave Rovers caretaker Paul McGinley is hoping a hectic end to the season ends in promotion.

The Castle Douglas side have 12 league games left, starting with Finnart visiting Meadow Park this weekend.

The top three sides in the third division of the West of Scotland League will go up at the end of the season, with Threave currently having two games in hand over third placed Lanark United, who are six points better off.

McGinley said: “There are eight or nine teams fighting for promotion and our mindset from day one has been that’s our aim. We’ll try everything in our powers to get there – whether we can or not remains to be seen.

“We’ll take it one game at a time and climb the ladder if we can. We played Finnart in the cup earlier in the season but you couldn’t judge anything on that game.”

After Finnart, Threave host Port Glasgow, who they defeated 3-0 on Saturday.

Threave led at the break after Ross Irving’s shot was handled and Danny Dunglinson scored from the spot.

Dan Orsi slotted away the second just after the hour mark before Dunglinson sealed things with a tremendous goal a quarter of an hour from time.

McGinley (right) said: “It was quite a tough game, they started really sharp and we had to juggle a few things round to get a foothold in the game.

“They were a nippy team up front and created a few problems for us.

“I think over the 90 minutes it was very professional for the boys. We took our chances when they came along and were solid at the other end so it was a pleasing day.

“We knew to get three points was vital to keep us in with a chance.”
