Thomas Tuchel sack at Chelsea shows Manchester United were right with Erik ten Hag decision

When Chelsea made the decision to sack Thomas Tuchel — the coach who guided them to their second Champions League title just four months after replacing Frank Lampard at the helm — many people were surprised. Given the club's reputation, though, plenty weren't.

The London club's co-owner Todd Boehly suggested it was "the right time" to bring in a new head coach after just seven games of the new season. Given that the Blues have already lost three matches this so far season, the sacking of Tuchel felt very Roman Abramovich-esque.

Chelsea managers losing their jobs has become a regular occurrence in the past decade, so it doesn't come as that much of a surprise that Tuchel — a man heavily linked with the Manchester United manager's role last season — didn't even make it to October.

Earlier this year, when interim manager Ralf Rangnick was doing his best to guide his team into the top four of the Premier League, United were linked with a move for the then Blues boss. It came at a time when Chelsea were in turmoil, with the sale of the club taking longer than many expected it to.

With the London club unable to sign players and extend anyone's contracts due to the government sanctions placed on the club, speculation around the manager's future intensified.

Although it appeared clear that United would look to appoint either Mauricio Pochettino or Erik ten Hag at the end of the season, many people still suggested that Tuchel would be a good option at Old Trafford. It wasn't even the first time that the German had been linked with the United job, with reports claiming the two parties shared a mutual interest while he was Paris Saint-Germain boss.
