Thomas Tuchel delivers Cristiano Ronaldo verdict amid Chelsea transfer links

This summer has seen Cristiano Ronaldo linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with the Portuguese legend rumoured to be looking for a route out of Old Trafford after failing to qualify for the Champions League last season.

It is understood by that talks were held between Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes and new Chelsea owner, but that Thomas Tuchel opted against signing the five-time Ballon D'Or winner. The 37-year-old was United's top scorer last season, but the club struggled following his arrival at the club last summer, finishing sixth in the Premier League and winning no trophies.

However, due to the departure of Romelu Lukaku coupled with the talks which have previously been held with the star, there could yet be some more developments in the story. Chelsea would be able to provide Champions League football to the star, as well as the chance to win the competition for the sixth time with the Blues having done so in 2021.

During his side's pre-season tour of the USA, Thomas Tuchel was glowing in praise for the legendary front man when asked about a potential move for the star. However, he refused to comment on any transfer talks which might be ongoing with the former Real Madrid and Juventus star.

He told reporters: "He is a fantastic player and a fantastic player for a fantastic club in our competition, the Premier League. So out of respect, we don't comment on these players because we don't like other coaches speaking about our players. So this is where this has to stay. We focused on our top target, Raheem Sterling, that we could sign and everything else stays behind closed doors."
