This is my theory how Celtic and Rangers brokered truce but I fear it's an invitation to the anti social

I suspect the hand of Sky Television in restoring some semblance of bipartisan atmosphere at next season’s Old Firm derbies.

The new, five per cent ticket allocation for away fans is a civilised step forward in restoring the old ways and improving the televisuals at the same time. But I’d imagine the proviso that the plan comes into being dependent on “necessary requirements being satisfied at both Celtic Park and Ibrox” refers to safety controls.

How do you seat rival fans in close proximity and keep them safe from physical harm at the same time? It’s a terrible indictment of society at large but you could hardly protest that no such threat exists. A logistical nightmare for the clubs, an invitation for the anti-social to realise that any serious incidents closes down the admission of away fans. For ever.

You wouldn’t think that, in this day and age, you’d have to mention the prospect of draconian consequences for serious misbehaviour. You’d be entitled to believe that people would be so happy to see some kind of normality returning to the fixture it would act as an incentive to ensure the match-day experience, as it applies to the unique nature of Old Firm games, would be rehabilitated.

But this is the season in which a match between the women’s teams representing both clubs fell victim to law and order issues. Celtic’s ticket allocation for the game at Ibrox – 800 in number – had to be hastily withdrawn in totality after police intelligence revealed the fear of the fans’ group being infiltrated on the day by interlopers intent on causing trouble.
