Third murder arrest after boy left 'screaming for help' in garden dies

A third person been arrested on suspicion of the murder of 17-year-old Callum Riley in Heywood, detectives have said tonight. Police have confirmed the identification of the teenager who was found badly hurt in the garden of a property on Atholl Drive in Heywood this morning (September 17). He died a short time later.

Greater Manchester Police earlier today confirmed the arrest of an 18-year-old man and 21-year-old woman on suspicion of the murder of Callum. Detective Chief Inspector, Gina Brennand, of GMP's Major Incident Team, issued an update into the murder investigation this evening following the arrest of a 33-year-old man.

They said: "On behalf of GMP, I send condolences to Callum’s family. A specially trained officer has been deployed to liaise with them and ensure they are fully updated on our investigation.

"Since this morning, we’ve made progress in establishing the full circumstances surrounding this incident and have made a third arrest. However, our enquiries are very much ongoing and we are continuing to appeal for information.

"We are continually assessing the impact this incident has had on local communities but I reiterate that we do not believe there is any risk to the public. Officers from the Rochdale district will be providing a visible presence in the coming days for reassurance."

Mr Riley was known affectionately as 'Russell' or 'Russel' to pals due to his similar appearance as a child to a character in a film, local residents told the Manchester Evening News earlier today. Tributes have been paid by hundreds of people on Facebook since the announcement of his tragic death.
