Tear-strewn cup finals are nothing new for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

In 2016, the sight of several of his crestfallen players, most notably Philippe Coutinho, were the abiding images of a penalty shootout loss to Manchester City.

Over two years later and Loris Karius' waterworks became indelibly etched into the collective memory of the 2018 Champions League final.

Karius' very evident heartbreak is sadly an inescapable part of the Liverpool iconography where that defeat to Real Madrid in Kiev is concerned.

And for 120 minutes at Wembley on Sunday, it was unclear if there would be one or two others in Liverpool red who would be joining Thiago Alcantara in shedding a tear at their Carabao Cup final day misfortune.

That was until Caoimhin Kelleher rattled in a spot-kick to make it 11-10 and his goalkeeping counterpart, Kepa Arrizabalaga, hammered his own over the bar.

In that instant, Thiago's tears - visible from the Wembley bench upon kick-off - faded to the background in terms of the main cup-final narratives.

Liverpool would not rue the absence of the talented midfielder as they instead toasted to a record-setting ninth League Cup success.
