Farhad Moshiri must give new director of football what Marcel Brands never had at Everton

Director of football was a position where we weren’t sure how Everton were going to go forward but the appointment of Kevin Thelwell hints at a change of direction in the role.

I’ve questioned the owner Farhad Moshiri a few times over what is the point in having a sporting director if he hasn’t got the opportunities to make the decisions he needs to.

We’ve been guilty under both Steve Walsh and Marcel Brands of having a ‘too many cooks’ kind of approach to recruitment.

Everyone has seemingly been having their say on transfers at time, including the chairman and the owner.

When things go wrong, it opens the door for excuses over who made that decision.

It works when we’re all on the same hymn sheet but for the last five years or so, the recruitment has been shocking – it hasn’t worked.

The amount of money Everton have spent for the returns we’ve got has been questionable and there aren’t many positives we can speak about.

Kevin has got the experience. He was at Wolverhampton Wanderers but that got taken away from him because of Jorge Mendes’ influence.

He went to a huge franchise at New York Red Bulls – they’re not daft, they’re very clever – and have a great worldwide set-up.

He’s very well-connected, is trustworthy and has the ability to do the job.

Kevin has got an impressive CV, he knows what we need as a football club and will understand where Everton have gone wrong.

Fingers crossed he’ll be given the power to get us where we need to be.

In the past we’ve made bad decisions and have been guilty of panic buys and forced issues.

It’s not right for the football club but Kevin is coming in with a fresh set of eyes and I’m hoping that proves a blessing going forward.
