'They make all these promises and nothing comes of it': Voters in Denton have 'heard it all before'

The Denton area is flush with local cafes and businesses just around the corner from a retail park. The area is busy yet most people have not seen funding promised by the Conservative government to level up areas outside of the South East.

The daily hazards of potholes and the issue of a lack of funding for the community are brought up time and time again.

Whilst walking around Victoria Park - which is currently going through a gardening rejuvenation by the local council - most locals laughed at the idea that funding was going to anything useful.

Denton resident Chloe Kelly, 26, rocking her pram back and forth said: “Not, really no, I haven’t seen a great lot of anything.”

Most people struggled to find tangible and valuable improvements to the constituency. It comes with having no hope in the government system. Minds have been changed over and over about who they will vote for and the issue of voting tactically weighs heavy on most residents’ minds.

Duncan Edwards, 59, owner of Denton Pet Foods has decided to vote Reform. He confesses in having very little faith in both the Labour Party and the Conservative Party respectively.

“We’ve heard it before, haven’t we? They make all these promises and nothing comes of it.”

Another issue that has swayed voters’ minds in Denton is the government response to Israel’s war on Gaza. This has deterred Usman Khan, 31, who has previously voted Labour but is now voting for an independent candidate.

Dawn Platt, 51, has also noticed the changing attitudes to political parties based on their stance on Gaza in the college in which she works.
