'They like him a lot' - Journalist claims PIF 'have been talking about' £15k p/w target for NUFC

Phil Hay, who writes for The Athletic, has been speaking about Newcastle United’s interest in Jack Harrison this summer.

It has been reported throughout the summer that Newcastle were admirers of Harrison, however, on Wednesday they appeared to firm up that interest by lodging an £18m bid, although that was swiftly knocked back by Leeds United.

Reports have suggested that Leeds would be wanting to receive at least £35m for the winger who’s served them well with 25 goal involvements over two full seasons in the Premier League, so it’s no surprise to see Newcastle keen on Harrison with those numbers.

Hay, who was speaking on his Leeds United podcast, The Phil Hay Show, spoke of Newcastle’s genuine interest in Harrison.

He said: “The thing about Harrison is that there is real interest in him from Newcastle and there has been all summer. They like him a lot, they like his engine, they like how tenacious he is.

“They also like his goal output last season which is something that they need to improve on and they have been talking about him right since the window opened.”

TIF Thoughts on interest in Harrison…

It’s very clear that Newcastle are in need of a new attacking winger who can help take some pressure off of Allan Saint-Maximin as their other options, Ryan Fraser, Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy combined for just nine goal involvements across the whole Premier League season last time out.

While the £15k-per-week Harrison may not be the big-name signing like someone such as Moussa Diaby would be, he would arrive Premier League proven and know where the back of the net is, something that could prove very valuable if Callum Wilson, the clubs’ usual goalscorer, picks up another long-term injury.
