These drivers jumped ship to Formula E after doors closed in Formula 1

Cape Town is a little more than a week away from hosting one of the biggest motorsport codes in the world when Formula E heads to the Mother City.

In all the excitement, it's easy to overlook that world-class drivers will be gracing our doorsteps. But what some people may not know is that many Formula 1 drivers jump to Formula E when the door to F1 opportunities close on them.

Since Formula E's inception in 2014, many F1 drivers have graced the sport with their presence, achieving the ultimate success in the world's first open-cockpit single-seater electric series. We look at former F1 drivers on the current Formula E grid.

F1 drivers in Formula E

Sébastien Buemi (34-years-old)

Buemi was involved in Formula E since the beginning. Competing in Season 1 (2014/15) for Team e.dams Renault, Buemi secured three wins and three pole positions, and appeared on the podium five times. The following year, he would win the Formula E championship.

Having participated in every race for the last nine seasons, Buemi has 13 wins, 29 podiums, and 15 pole positions to his name. He currently races for the Envision Racing team.

Regarding his time in F1, he raced for Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri) between 2009 and 2011, but in 2012 he was removed from a racing seat and instead given the role of test and reserve driver - a role he still fulfils in between his Formula E activities.

Lucas di Grassi (38)

Di Grassi had a very brief stint in F1 with his sole year in the sport, in 2010, delivering no noteworthy results. Racing for the Virgin Racing team, Di Grassi finished the season 24th in the Drivers' championship, and the team also released him from his duties.
