"There's a real question mark" - Keith Downie now hints at Newcastle transfer swoop

Newcastle: ‘Real question mark’ for Howe could lead to St. James’ Park deal

There’s a “real question mark” over Newcastle‘s goalkeeping situation heading into the summer, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

Eddie Howe failed in his attempts to sign a goalkeeper in January but he is set to continue his search once the window reopens for business.

Martin Dubravka is currently in control of the gloves at St James’ Park and has started the last 21 Premier League games.

However, the Slovakian is one of three stoppers that have been used in the top-flight this season, highlighting the uncertain situation which surrounds Newcastle’s goalkeeping department.

Freddie Woodman started the campaign as first-choice, playing 90 minutes in each of the Magpies’ opening four league games, before a hip injury would end his chances of being number one long-term.

Karl Darlow would replace him and start the next eight games, although he didn’t keep a clean sheet in that period, and with Newcastle failing to win, he was dropped and replaced by Dubravka.

Since winning his place back, Dubravka has been a mainstay, although with the Toon Army hierarchy pushing hard to add a goalkeeper to their squad in the last window, even his position could be in doubt.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think there’s a real question mark over the goalkeeping position going into next season, and I think in the summer, that’ll be the most interesting part of the team to look at, as to whether he will improve the goalkeeping department.”
