The truth behind Blackburn Rovers’ transfer links to Brighton’s Taylor Richards

Blackburn Rovers are not interested in signing Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Taylor Richards, understands.

Reports from Football Insider on Monday suggested that Rovers and Queens Park Rangers were competing to sign the Seagulls man. However, Lancs Live understands these reports are wide of the mark.

Richards is set to join a Championship club but Rovers were never in the race for his signature. He could be unveiled by his new club on Wednesday.

Blackburn Rovers have three winners and two losers from pre-season so far

Rovers are yet to sign a new player for the first team this summer. Ethan Walker has joined from Preston North End, but will be for the club's youth teams in the first instance.

Brighton signed the 21-year-old Richards for £2.5milllion, from Manchester City in 2019. He went straight into the Seagulls' academy and made his senior debut against Aston Villa in the September of that year. Richards does have strong pedigree in the game, having started off at Fulham in 2009 and represented England under-17s.

While things didn't quite work out as hoped with the Blues last season, Richards has enjoyed time away from Brighton on loan. In 2020/21 he scored 11 goals in 48 outings for Doncaster Rovers in League One. He currently has two years left to run on his deal at the AMEX Stadium and has played five times for the first team in total.

Links with QPR go further back than with Blackburn, but Jon Dahl Tomasson does need midfield reinforcements this summer after the loss of Joe Rothwell to AFC Bournemouth. Reda Khadra - also of Brighton - is no longer on loan, nor is Ian Poveda from Leeds, while Bradley Johnson and Jacob Davenport have departed.
