The 'supreme' Greater Manchester pub crowned one of the best in Europe in new 2025 guide

What makes a great pub or bar? Perhaps it's the selection of beers, or maybe it's the atmosphere and crowd that frequents it.

Taking some of the guesswork out of the equation - and giving us inspiration for our next city break - The European Bar Guide has unveiled its top 100 bars for 2025 - and a Greater Manchester boozer has received a nod.

An exposition of the best pubs and bars in Europe, the guide features venues from across a range of European destinations, including Belgium, France, Spain and Germany, amongst others. In total, the guide features 16 UK watering holes including one here in Stockport.

For each entry, the guide has scored the pub or bar based on a number of criteria including choice and quality of drinks, style and décor, and atmosphere and character. Awarding it a score out of ten, other factors taken into consideration include amenities and events, and value for money.

Having scoured the continent to track down the very best boozers and watering holes, a small village pub in Derbyshire has taken home the top spot for the UK. Landing at number 21, The Holly Bush in Makeney has scored a near perfect 9.5 out of 10 and is praised for its range of beers that would 'shame some venues in cities, quite far beyond what is normally on offer in village venues'.

The 17th Century Inn with low ceiling, stone walls and plenty of fireplaces is also commended for 'very social and extremely cosy' atmosphere, as well as it's value for money, and range of music nights, community events and amenities.

Closer to home, Ye Olde Vic in Edgeley has also made the cut, coming in at number 72. Scoring a very impressive 8.9 out of 10,
