The real 'reason' for Vinicius Junior Ballon d'Or snub as fans convinced one incident cost him Golden Ball
Real Madrid were outraged at Vinicius Junior missing out on the Ballon d’Or and snubbed the glitzy event in Paris, with Rodri taking top spot.
But fans are convinced they know the real reason the Brazilian missed out on the prestigious prize – and it has NOTHING to do with footballing ability. Instead, they reckon the 24-year-old blew his chance by failing in one of the three categories required to lift the Golden Ball. Candidates are judged on “individual performances, decisive and impressive character”, “team performances and achievements” and “fair play and class on the field”.
And supporters are adamant Vinicius Junior let himself down in the third of those with often petulant attitude. And one incident in particular has resurfaced on social media when the Real Madrid ace wound up Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich.
Towards the end of the La Liga side’s stunning comeback win against Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final last season, the Samba star irritated the Germany international with his time-wasting. Kimmich fetched the ball to give to Vinicius but ended up dropping it right in front of him but the former Flamengo man was unmoved and in no rush which led to Kimmich picking it up again.
Under a clip of that incident one fan said on social media: “Don’t get this outrage about Vinicius Junior not winning the Ballon d’Or. One of the main criteria is being classy on the pitch and fair player. Based on that Vini shouldn’t even be invited to the ceremony because his behaviour is a disgrace to the sport."
