The Rangers line up when Allan McGregor made his debut as keeper marks 20 year milestone

Allan McGregor will walk out to a wall of noise at Ibrox as a battle-hardened veteran when Rangers take on the mighty Borussia Dortmund.

And the white-hot atmosphere and Europa League stage against the German giants will be a world away from when his debut 20 years ago to the very day.

McGregor is in his second spell with the Light Blues where he came through the youth ranks to establish himself as the number one goalkeeper.

February 24, 2022 is set to be a big night for the 40-year-old as the Scottish Premiership champions look to finish off the job they started with a 4-2 win in the Westfalenstadion last week.

It was the same two decades ago when he made his Rangers top team bow under Alex McLeish.

The surroundings though, was far more modest as he came off the bench at Station Park for the last 17 minutes of a 6-0 Scottish Cup rout against Forfar Athletic.

McGregor replaced Stefan Klos, ironically a Champions League-winning legend at Dortmund, with Gers safely in the hat for the next round and a crucial UEFA Cup second leg tie against Feyenoord a few days later.

It was the start of an incredible journey at Ibrox which saw him fight for his first place with loan spells at Dunfermline and St Johnstone, leave following administration when he joined Besiktas before returning and playing his part in the historic success of last season.

McGregor’s 2021 title gong made it eleven major honours at Ibrox and he will be desperate to add to that this season.

Here, Record Sport Online looks back at the line up in that rout of the Loons where it all started for the 40-year-old shot-stopper.
