The problems Manchester United's next manager must fix - starting with Harry Maguire

Manchester United are left to pick up the pieces of a 4-1 defeat at Manchester City and a performance which underlined how much a work a prospective new manager has ahead of them.

Gary Neville described United's second-half display - which saw City maintain 92 per cent possession in one 15-minute spell - as 'spiritless', while interim coach Ralf Rangnick acknowledged the gulf between the clubs.

The result leaves United with an uphill battle to qualify for next season's Champions League, something which could affect their summer transfer plans.

Rangnick is expected to work on a two-year consultancy basis once his term as head coach is up at the end of the season, with Erik Ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino strongly linked with the permanent job.

Telegraph Sport assesses the problems the new manager will need to fix.

Harry Maguire headed straight to the Manchester United supporters after they endured the 4-1 humiliation at the hands of their neighbours. Other players ventured in the direction of the away section and clapped but only Maguire made it to the penalty area closest to them.

He fronts up when the results are bad and issued rallying calls at different points during their slump this season. But on current form he cannot be guaranteed a place in the team. Ralf Rangnick had him on the bench against Aston Villa and Brentford when he returned from injury, then recently against Watford.

When the new United manager starts in the summer, he needs to play to Maguire’s strengths to get the best from him. His best form has come in a deeper backline where he can read passes and clear danger. When he picked up a yellow card for fouling Kevin De Bruyne, he had been exposed again with City getting clear behind him.
