'The problem is' - Pep Guardiola hints at future Man City changes

Pep Guardiola indicated that Manchester City have to set up a squad for future success - even if it means going without more trophies this season.

The Blues have won the Premier League for the last four years and won a memorable Treble in 2023, but cannot afford to rest as they look to end a four-match losing run in all competitions that is the worst during Guardiola's time at the club. The manager has used the November international break to convince himself not only that he has the drive to turn things round but also that everyone else at the club is committed to doing so.

That applies to the short term as City look to get back on track in the Premier League and Champions League, but also looking to 2027 and beyond. Those close to Guardiola believe his desire to rebuild the team was behind his desire to commit again to a job that he seriously considered leaving, and in his first interview since the contract extension was confirmed the coach hinted at the 'problem' that needs to be tackled.

"I have friends around me and I know in the bad moments we are together. Now we can celebrate these nine incredible years but in these nine years we had tough periods and bad moments," he said.
