'The problem' for Wolves this season has been their 'lack of goal'

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, ‘the problem’ for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season has been their ‘lack of goals’.

Bruno Lage’s charges are sitting pretty in the upper echelons of the Premier League table at this moment in time, but things could be even more promising for them if they were more clinical in the final third.

The Midlands outfit have been one of the surprise packages of the season, pulling off shock victories over the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

And the key to Wolves’ good fortune has been their resolute defending. Their tally of nine clean sheets is the fifth-highest in the top-flight of English football and is only one short of their total for the whole of 2020/21.

However, what is more impressive, though, is the fact only 17 strikes have found their way past goalkeeper Jose Sa in their opening 23 Premier League fixtures.

Only table-toppers Manchester City have leaked fewer efforts, with European champions Chelsea and title-challengers Liverpool unable to match their outstanding defensive record.

But Lage is yet to strike the perfect balance between keeping it tight at the back and causing damage in attack.

Wolves’ miserly total of 21 goals in the third-lowest in the division and a whopping 40 fewer than both City and Liverpool and even two fewer than 19th-placed Watford.

The Molineux side has showcased their ability to take on any opponent in the current campaign, with no side yet to put more than two efforts past them in a single game.

Yet O’Rourke believes their problems lie at the other end of the pitch.
