The 'ordinary' terraced house transformed into an 'oasis' that has been named House of the Year 2023

A house that was once an 'ordinary' terrace but has now been hailed as a 'true oasis' has won House of the Year 2023. The five-bed property is nestled down an alleyway in Tottenham, London and has been given a huge revamp by its current owners.

Named the 'Green House', the home has been given the annual award by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) - who look for the best example of a one-off house designed by an architect in the UK. The innovative house was described by judges as a “domestic greenhouse” and an “extraordinary ordinary house”.

Although it looks normal from the outside, the budget house designed by Hayhurst & Co is now completely different from its surrounding neighbours having reimagined the 'typical terraced house'. Inside it now features polycarbonate panels, cross-laminated timber walls, screened with dense planting and has a discrete exterior which hides the compact home.

Located in the Clyde Circus Conservation Area, the house also has a roof terrace and surrounding greenery, as well as roof-lights in the atrium, and was “built on a very tight budget”.

Chairwoman of the jury, Dido Milne, a director at CSK Architects, said: “Green House, affectionately known as the Tottenham Riad, is a true oasis within the city. It is both airy and cosy, bold yet respectful of its neighbours.
