The most bizarre disallowed goal? Rooney vs Liverpool in 2014
Wayne Rooney‘s record as a player against Liverpool is far from the greatest.
The man who represented the Reds’ two fiercest rivals in Manchester United and Everton was on the winning side in just 13 games out of 30 across all competitions.
Rooney tasted defeat against Liverpool nine times and he only managed to score seven goals as well – which is poor by his lofty standards.
And in 2014, the current Derby County manager netted one of the most bizarre disallowed goals in football history when playing against the Merseyside club, one which is rarely talked about these days.
In a pre-season match between United and Liverpool in Miami, Rooney thought he’d found the back of the net when he rolled the ball into an empty net from close-range.
The ball appeared to have bounced off of Simon Mignolet’s crossbar and straight to the United striker’s feet, with the goal initially given by the referee.
However, television replays told a VERY different story…
It turned out that the ball had actually hit the stanchion from Ashley Young’s looping effort before arriving in Rooney’s path, meaning it had actually gone out play and therefore had to be disallowed.
To say it was an extraordinary sequence of events would be an understatement.
Nearly eight years later and we’re still yet to see another disallowed goal quite like Rooney’s. You’d think the laws of physics would prevent that from happening, but apparently not.
Divock Origi’s famous late winner against Everton in late 2018 was close to being a repeat, but the ball bounced off the actual crossbar that time instead of the out-of-bounds stanchion.
Rooney’s disallowed goal against Liverpool in 2014 pre-season had little impact on the result, with United eventually securing a 3-1
