The men 'unlawfully arrested and strip-searched' by Greater Manchester Police - with one left naked in cell three times

An inquiry into the treatment and experiences of women and girls in Greater Manchester Police custody also considered the stories of three men who were arrested. One of them, over the course of just 12 months, was arrested five times, strip-searched and left naked in a cell three times and detained for a total of 40 hours before being released - with no criminal proceedings ever following.

On one occasion, he was stripped naked and his cell totally emptied. He was given no food or drink for 10 hours and splashed hot water over himself to keep warm - until a custody sergeant turned off the water supply.

Another man - who said he was suicidal after his arrest - was pushed 'vastly outnumbered' by officers into a cell at Swinton police station in Salford then shoved onto a floor mattress, stripped naked and left. The inquiry's report revealed he sustained a serious injury to his face and needed surgery in hospital to 'save his sight'. The man, named Adam in the report, is said to be suing GMP.

GMP has been told it must be 'an explicit policy' that
