Life in the waterside Greater Manchester village with beautiful walks, cosy brunch spots and buzzing bars

It’s one of Salford’s most desirable places to live, and if you walk down its high street full of independent businesses, it’s clear to see why.

Often compared to Burton Road in West Didsbury, the vibrant Salford suburb of Monton continues to attract visitors with its plethora of brunch spots, buzzing cocktail bars and independent shops.

With the arrival of the summer months, the doors and windows of businesses along Monton Road are flung open, and chairs and tables promptly assembled on the pavements and terraces, as locals and visitors alike find themselves a spot in the sun to enjoy their brunch, coffee and cocktails.

It makes sense then that it’s sometimes referred to by its moniker of Monton Carlo - even if it’s just a bit of fun. But, venture down through the village and you will actually come across a breakfast spot with that very name.

And, whilst Monton might not be the south of France, it has established itself as one of Greater Manchester’s best food and drink scenes - giving the likes of Chorlton, Didsbury, Sale and Stockport a run for their money.

Historically in Lancashire, Monton was administered by the municipal of Eccles until its abolition in 1974. One of its major attractions, alongside its strong crop of independent businesses, restaurants and bars, is its location though.

On the edge of the village is the historic Bridgewater Canal, ideal for a weekend walk, and there’s also The Roe Green Loopline, a traffic-free walking and cycling route that starts in Monton and passes up to Worsley Green and back down the canal towpath.
