The latest in the horrific case of a woman strangled to death with a t-shirt by a convicted rapist

'Learning points' have been identified after the brutal murder of a young woman with a coroner to now decide if an inquest into her death should be held.

Elizabeth McCann, 26, was plied with booze before being raped and strangled to death with her own t-shirt by sadistic convicted sex offender Simon Goold.

In February this year Goold, 52, pleaded guilty to murdering her on the second day of his trial and later that month was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 35 years.

His sentencing hearing was told that he had previously been convicted of rape, sexual assault and wounding in October 2010 and was on life licence when he was released from prison in April 2019. A month later he met Ms McCann at a Health and Wellbeing college in Ashton-under-Lyne.

After messaging her on Facebook on August 24 last year, he met her for a drink at the Star Inn pub on Old Street before buying her several rounds of double vodka and coke and numerous shots of Sambuca. Ms McCann, who was on medication and rarely drank alcohol, was seen falling over and being physically sick.

After bar staff refused to serve him any more drinks, he escorted her back to his flat on Manchester Road in a taxi - sexually assaulting her during the journey. Neighbours then heard shouts and screams for around 25 minutes.

The following morning Goold rang police and told them that there was a ‘dead woman in his bedsit’ and that he had killed her by strangling her during sex.

However, he later admitted sexually assaulting, raping and killing her. A post mortem report concluded she had suffered 'significnant internal and external injuries' along with ligature marks
