The latest Greater Manchester town in store for a serious transformation

Fresh plans for the transformation of a Greater Manchester town have been revealed. The multi-million pound project for Stretford town centre - which includes demolishing some of Stretford Mall - were approved last year, but the plans have now changed.

Work started on the first stage of the scheme this summer. But Trafford council and its development partner Bruntwood have made some modifications to the masterplan which will affect the location of the Aldi supermarket, the new park and the height of buildings.

The original plans include building 800 homes, restoring the historic King Street area and opening up access to the Bridgewater Canal to make space for waterfront bars and restaurants. The overall size of the development is still the same despite some changes.

However, the Aldi supermarket will now remain in the same location with 'improvements' to the surface car park planned. A 'retail walking circuit' will also be created through the new park along Chester Road and into King Street, if the changes are approved.

There will still be 800 new homes - a mixture of town houses and apartments with some affordable housing - as well as space for shops, restaurants, bars and educational space. The new park still features in the plans, but it will be moved for 'better connectivity'.

The new park will be 'at the heart' of the town centre, according to the website setting out the changes proposed. It proposes that the park is re-orientated, in part, to provide better views and easier walking routes towards St Matthew's Church and Victoria
