So the transfer Olympics are under way again, with Calvin Bassey ready to set a new record.

Over on Sky Sports today, Sahil Jaidka wrote an article about the player that was so long, it made my eyes water.

But the part that really made me laugh was this:

“Rangers are relaxed over interest in the Nigerian international and will not entertain any bids unless they exceed £20m, with one source suggesting any deal may need to better the all-time Scottish record of £25m when Kieran Tierney joined Arsenal from Celtic.”

Okay, let’s just pretend for a second that this could really happen (which it won’t, I guarantee it), there are a couple of factors that need to be taken into account.

Ajax and Brighton are the clubs reported to be interested in the player.

Ajax recently spent just under £27 million on Steven Bergwijn.

Bergwijn is a full Dutch international, with 22 caps to his name. On top of this, he has 60 appearances for his previous club, Tottenham and a further 112 for PSV Eindhoven.

Bassey has 6 Nigerian caps and 37 appearances with the Ibrox side, yet he is worth £25 million?

Or as a “source” says, any deal may need to better the all time Scottish record of £25 million.

Like I said, Helluva source.

Now, I’m not saying Ajax won’t buy Bassey (“sources” say their manager has spoken to him on the phone), but £25 million+??

That is fanciful at best.

Brighton, who seem to be an afterthought in this whole fantasy, have never paid that amount for a player.

Arsenal paid £25 million for Kieran Tierney because he had already played 102 times for Celtic, winning 8 trophies in the process.
