The hidden gem fishing village named the Canary Island’s best holiday resort

A picturesque fishing village in Gran Canaria has been named the best holiday resort in the Canary Islands, according to a new survey by consumer group Which?. Puerto de Mogán beat other popular resorts, including Los Cristianos in Tenerife and Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria - which actually ranked last.

A total of 1,020 Which? members were invited to rate their experiences of Canary Island destinations, based on eight criteria including the quality of the beach, scenery, food and drink, accommodation, and value for money. A resort score was calculated based on overall satisfaction and likeliness to recommend.

Overall it was the islands' smaller, quieter resorts that impressed people the most, compared with the popular holiday hotspots. Many of these locations were targeted by large-scale protests this year as local residents voiced concerns over the impact of mass-tourism.

Puerto de Mogán topped the list with a score of 90 per cent. It impressed British holidaymakers with its quaint marina, white-washed houses and labyrinthine old town, with those surveyed calling it a “peaceful, beautiful place”.

It scored five stars for accommodation and four-star ratings for food and drink, scenery and value for money - the only resort in the survey to do so. It also received three stars for peace and quiet.

In second place with a score of 77 per cent was Playa Blanca, the highest-rated Lanzarote resort. At the southern tip of the island, this refined resort offers a relaxed pace of life, with respondents describing it as “child- friendly” and “easy going”.
