The Erling Haaland inspiration behind Rory Wilson's stunning form as Scotland kid's incredible scoring record goes on

Scotland wonderkid Rory Wilson revealed he’s been taking inspiration from Manchester City record-breaker Erling Haaland as he strives to smash his own targets this season.

But the Aston Villa ace confessed he’s still got some way to go before he can fulfil his aim of lining up against the 52-strike Norwegian scoring sensation in the Premier League. Former Rangers youngster Wilson has been in lethal form since moving south last summer. He grabbed his 32nd goal for club and country as Scotland lost their opening Under-17 European Championship clash in Hungary to France on Wednesday.

He’ll be out to add to that tally this afternoon as Brian McLaughlin’s youngsters take on second Group C opponents Portugal. Wilson said: “I always set targets, what I’m looking to aim for. You have to try to improve each year. Haaland's a good role model to look at, players like him and Karim Benzema are really good to study.

“I like Benzema, Haaland, Harry Kane. I like to watch all different kinds of strikers and pick up different things from them all. It’s about trying to watch as many top games as I can in the Champions League and international football and try to take wee bits from that and add it into my own game.

“I'm quite happy where I am. I just have to take it game by game over the next two games and hopefully continue to try and play well as a team and get results and score goals.”

Wilson may be one of the most hotly-tipped prospects to come out of Scotland in years but the 17-year-old is still waiting for new Villa boss Unai Emery - who replaced former Gers gaffer Steven Gerrard last year - to dish out a first-team invite.
