The destination named best value holiday resort a flight from Manchester Airport

Sunny Beach in Bulgaria has been crowned Europe's ‘best value’ summer holiday resort for families, according to new research. It beat destinations in Turkey and Portugal to bag the number one spot.

The research, conducted by Post Office Travel Money, looked at the most common tourist expenses in 16 popular destinations. Sunny Beach was found to have the best value overall, with prices such as £1.38 for a cup of coffee, £9.67 for a bottle of suncream, £4.37 for insect repellent, and £59.38 for a three-course family meal including wine and soft drinks.

Marmaris in Turkey came in second place, while Portugal’s Algarve region ranked in third. The most expensive destination analysed was Ibiza, Spain, where prices were more than double those in Sunny Beach.

Post Office Travel Money urged people booking family breaks to do “holiday homework” to avoid “busting the budget while abroad”. Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at Post Office, said: “Even though sterling is stronger now than last July, price inflation across Europe means that families need to allow for increases in meals, drinks and other tourist costs in their spending budget.

“Doing some holiday homework before leaving home could help to reduce the chances of busting the budget while abroad.” Post Office Travel Money did find that prices had risen in 12 of the European resorts it surveyed, reflecting how costs have increased all round.

Holidaymakers can fly direct from Manchester Airport to Bulgaria. BH Air, easyJet, Jet2.com and TUI all fly to Burgas with the resort of Sunny Beach around a 45-minute drive away.
