The cop shop where you can actually walk in and speak to the police - for the first time in 10 years

The closure of police stations across Greater Manchester has been all too common. In the 1990s, Salford once had stations in Eccles, Swinton, Higher Broughton and a HQ on The Crescent.

Each had its own CID and uniformed officers - until they were all shut and replaced by a new main base in Swinton and a station with a custody suite at Pendleton.

Many other stations have a yellow phone on the wall for people to use, but no access for the public. But one station is bucking the trend.

Saddleworth station, on High Street, Uppermill, Oldham, has opened its doors to the public for the first time in a decade. Sergeant Connor Brook, of the Saddleworth and Lees Neighbourhood Policing Team, held a surgery at the station on Saturday, September 16.

Greater Manchester Police chiefs said it was the first of many surgeries set to take place there. Members of the community can speak with neighbourhood cops and PCSOs. Passers-by can also raise issues with the area team directly.

Sergeant Brook said: "We are a remote community who are fortunate enough to host one of GMP's few satellite police stations. One of the primary concerns for our residents is the accessibility and visibility of police in their area and as such, we have launched new ways to open lines of communication with our community it is imperative we find out what issues are impacting on them and build key community intelligence to make us more efficient at fighting and reducing crime."
