The breathtaking Peak District reservoir just a short drive from Manchester

Located on the edge of the Peak District but just a stone’s throw away from Oldham, Dovestones Reservoir provides you with dramatic scenery without having to travel far. It’s also home to some of the most impressive views in Greater Manchester.

Dovestones is the lowest and largest of three reservoirs in the Greenfield Valley, located above the village of Greenfield. Further up are Yeoman Hey Reservoir and Greenfield Reservoirs.

It’s an area which is rich in wildlife as well as natural beauty. With rolling moorland and tranquil water, it’s the perfect place to escape to for an afternoon.

You can follow a circular walk around Dovestones reservoir itself, which is around 2.5 miles. There’s also different routes you can take through the surrounding moorland.

Not far from the reservoir is The Trinnacle, a three-pronged gritstone formation which overlooks the Greenfield Valley. The intriguing rock formation is an iconic spot in the local area, and makes for a great photo opportunity.

You can follow the Trinnacle Trail, which is around 4.3 miles long, starting at the north end of Dovestones and circling around the Yeoman Hey and Greenfield Reservoirs. For stunning views over Dovestones Reservoir itself then head to Dovestones Edge. This Gritstone crag is popular with rock climbers and looks out onto the surrounding landscape.

The reservoir is home to the Dovestone Sailing Club, which welcomes people who are new to sailing as well as experienced members. The area is home to a wide range of wildlife, and the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) works closely with United Utilities to maintain habitats in the land surrounding
