Dwight Yorke reveals the only way Erik ten Hag will succeed at Manchester United

Erik ten Hag needs to be given ‘full control’ to succeed at Manchester United, according to former Old Trafford striker Dwight Yorke.

Ten Hag has signed a three-year deal with the Premier League club after agreeing to end his five-year spell at Ajax to become United’s fifth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United have not won a trophy since 2017 and are currently just sixth in the Premier League, having endured another torrid season under interim manager Ralf Rangnick and former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Yorke says United’s recent struggles have been a ‘disaster’ and insists Ten Hag has a ‘very difficult job’ on his hands as he looks to transfer success in Holland to the Premier League.

‘I think [Ten Hag has] got a very difficult job,’ Yorke told ESPN. ‘Simply because it has been a bit of a disaster for us as a football club in terms of personnel and where the team is at.

‘There’s no hiding place in that. We’re not where we’re supposed to be. But there’s a new beginning, a new start for a manager who a lot of people don’t particularly know.

‘Obviously, he has done well in Holland. [But] the Premier League is a whole new ball game. Manchester United’s manager is on a whole different level.

‘You’ve seen the previous managers that have come there with big names and big reputations and they haven’t really got over the line. There’s no doubt the job at hand is something he needs to embrace.’

Yorke, who won three Premier League titles and the Champions League at Old Trafford, says it will be ‘key’ for Ten Hag to take complete control of the club following his arrival in Manchester.

He added: ‘I keep saying that he has to embrace going in there and have full control.
