The bigger picture is clear for West Brom & Steve Bruce ahead of Fulham test

West Brom mounted a late come-back to seal an unlikely point at home to promotion challengers Huddersfield Town - despite trailing 2-0 with seven minutes to go.

Karlan Grant’s penalty and then Andy Carroll’s stooping header - his first goal since arriving in January - 60 seconds later ensured that Albion left the field with a share of the spoils, after Danny Ward has sent Town into what appeared to be an unassailable lead.

On the face of it, it looks a decent point, though whether it’ll be enough to satisfy Steve Bruce is unclear - Albion were, for large parts of this game, particularly poor.

Here are the talking points from The Hawthorns.

How many times in recent weeks and months have we seen Albion crumble after falling behind? It’s happened all so often. They rarely get spanked, because teams know that usually a goal or two is enough to see them off.

It happened at Millwall, at Sheffield United, at Luton. It happened on home soil, too, against Preston and Swansea. All of the sides mentioned won 2-0. Albion were rolled over time and again.

Heads go down, the mental resilience comes into question and the squad fails to rise to the challenge in the face of adversity. We saw signs of it here, after Ward’s bizarre opener. Their record when going behind this season is shocking.

Yet Bruce threw caution to the wind, sent for Carroll and Grady Diangana and, honestly, they might’ve taken all three points from a game in which they were two behind with seven minutes of normal time to play.

The late momentum, and the Brummie Road - those who’d remained - urging them forward, is a scenario we’ve not seen enough of.
