The big question on Leicester City's season doesn't have clear answer - but that doesn't matter

Like with the past two seasons, Leicester City’s campaign has ended and there’s not an obvious way to feel about it.

In the previous two years, there was a weird mix for City fans of being underwhelmed while recognising there had been an overachievement, the club finishing fifth on the last day after spending the whole campaign in the top four. This year, they ended the season with their best run of form to finish in the highest position they have been all term.

Leicester City finish eighth and reach a European semi-final. Shown this headline before a ball had been kicked, and most fans would have deemed that acceptable, even in spite of raised expectations. Then told that injuries would mean Jamie Vardy would be missing for 13 Premier League games, Wilfred Ndidi for 19, Jonny Evans for 20, Ricardo Pereira for 24, and Wesley Fofana for 31, and you might get supporters reassessing and agreeing that actually, eighth and a European semi-final is rather good.

Certainly, it cannot be considered a poor season. For what Leicester City are, and historically where they have been as a club, it would be unfair to treat it as such.

City have had 117 seasons in the league system, and in only 10 of them have they finished higher than this. When you consider wage and transfer expenditure, which remains the most accurate way of predicting where a side should finish, eighth is par for City, with the big six and Everton above them.

But, to focus on the headlines of the season overlooks the nuances. The headline does not tell the full story.
