The Ashes: Nathan Lyon to miss rest of series with a calf injury, replaced by Todd Murphy ahead of third Test

Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon will miss the rest of the Ashes series with a calf injury he picked up in the second Test at Lord's. Lyon pulled up on day two as he ran to field a ball. He hobbled out to bat on day four and scored four runs as he added 15 with Mitchell Starc.

Ad Cricket Australia confirmed that Lyon had a «significant calf tear» and has been replaced by spinner Todd Murphy. Murphy will be Australia's chief spinner for the first time in a decade. He had never missed a Test through injury until now. Lyon took eight wickets in Australia's victory in the first Test at Edgbaston. «I've been extremely lucky with injuries.

I've been around since August 2011 and we've had 126 Test matches and I've played 122 of them,» Lyon said. «This is just a little speed bump in the road. This isn't career-defining.

I am hungrier than ever to get back out there.» Australia currently lead 2-0 in the series after a dramatic 43-run final-day victory in the second Test on Sunday. The third Test will get underway at Headingley on Thursday. Spare batter Matt Renshaw, who fielded for Lyon on the last day of the Lord's Test, has been released from the squad but will remain in the UK on standby.
