The 5 big Willie Collum Rangers vs Ayr calls from 'bottling' Fabio Silva red card claim to firm Cortes penalty snub

Rangers saw off Ayr United to reach the Scottish Cup quarter-final - and the referee was still among the talking points.

That is because Willie Collum made his return to officiate the Light Blues for the first time since the controversial clash with Celtic on December 30. Rangers were incensed Celtic fullback Alastair Johnston was not penalised for a handball inside the penalty box by Collum in the VAR room. Ibrox officials lodged a complaint to the SPFL - and requested Collum was not involved in the officiating team for any more of their fixtures.

However, Collum was the man in the middle during a busy afternoon as Scott Brown took his Scottish Championship side to Ibrox. Philippe Clement's men saw the Premiership side triumph in an 2-0win thanks to goal from Borna Barisic and Fabio Silva - but there was no shortage of talking points from Collum's return to Ibrox.

In the opening exchanges, the Wolves loanee protested that he had been pulled in the box by Nick McAllister. In the end, Silva would be the man who was punished by whistler Collum for a handball as he attempted to control the cross in from the left. Silva would rush towards the referee to protest - and Michael Stewart conceded on Viaplay that he could see where the complaint stemmed from.

He said: “We have seen them given this season. There seems to have been some clarification on what a shirt pull is, but I can see why Silva is complaining.”

Oscar Cortes caused problems for the Ayr defence on his first start for Rangers - but saw his penalty claims waved away by Collum. The Colombian was involved in a tussle with Logan Chalmers before taking a tumble. The ref allowed play to continue -
