Lee Johnson insists Kevin Nisbet will be ready to step into the breach for Scotland when the Euro 2024 qualifiers kick off next month.

And he hopes Steve Clarke will take a punt on in-form Josh Campbell too - claiming the Hibs midfielder is ready to make the international leap. Nisbet has been sidelined with a hamstring injury for three weeks having blasted back from an ACL tear by hitting eight goals in nine games.

But the striker is back fit and ready to fire for club and country according to Johnson, with the Hampden double header against Cyprus and Spain just four weeks away. With QPR hitman Lyndon Dykes doubtful as he continues to fight back from a period in hospital with pneumonia and Sunderland’s Ross Stewart out long-term with an Achilles injury then Nisbet could get the nod. The 25-year-old has one international goal from 10 caps but hasn’t featured for his country since a World Cup qualifying win in Moldova in November 2021.

Johnson said: “There’s absolutely no reason why he can’t be ready for that. I would expect him to be in the mind’s eye of the squad.

“It was a very mild strain, the mildest of strains. The one that sticks out in my mind, in terms of international recognition, is Josh Campbell. I know there is quality in that squad, and it’s not easy to break into, but I feel like he is ready to make that step, in terms of the squad and the training element.

“He has been in youth sides and I think he is one who is starting to show signs in terms of composure and end product because his fitness has never been in doubt. His goals return has been good this year and I think that will continue to come.
