'That's why he stays' - Steven Gerrard sent clear Aston Villa transfer message after Burnley draw

The final match at Villa Park in 2021/22 saw Aston Villa held to a 1-1 draw by relegation scrappers Burnley.

Burnley took the lead in first half stoppage time through Ashley Barnes’ penalty, but Emiliano Buendia levelled matters in the 48th minute to ensure the spoils were shared. Villa remain in 14th position going into their final day clash with Manchester City at The Etihad.

Villa would have lost the match had it not been for an incredible goal-saving block by Tyrone Mings in the closing stages. Connor Roberts forced Emiliano Martinez into an excellent save before teeing up Wout Weghorst for a tap-in, but Mings produced an incredible block to deny the Burnley striker.

Reacting on social media to Mings’ decisive intervention, supporters praised the captain’s contribution. One supporter said: “Mings blocking one on the line for the haters there.”

Another added: “Telescopic boot from Mings there, absolutely phenomenal.” While a third Villan said: "What a block from Mings… that’s why he stays for me.”

Villa skipper Mings has been linked with a £35million transfer to Newcastle United, where his former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe is now in the hotseat. The defender often divides opinion amongst Villa fans, but he has been an ever-present under Steven Gerrard.
