‘That kills me’ – Dylan Alcott reveals Andy Murray text message that left him in tears

Dylan Alcott broke down in tears as he read a text message from Andy Murray congratulating him on his incredible career after retiring.

The 15-time major champion’s final match saw him lose to Sam Schroder in the Australian Open quad wheelchair singles final, sparking the end of a career that also saw him win eight doubles titles at the majors, as well as three Paralympic gold medals.

The 31-year-old just about held back the tears in his post-match interview on court as he reflected on his career and thanked his friends and family for their support.

But a text from three-time Grand Slam champion Murray during his final press conference saw him struggle to contain his emotions.

‘This just sums up how it’s changed,’ Alcott said while reading his text from the tennis idol.

‘I hope he doesn’t mind this.

‘But Andy Murray just messaged me: “I don’t know if I’ve articulated that well but you’re an absolute rock star and inspiration. Thanks for everything that you’ve done.”

‘That kills me. Makes me want to cry. It’s special. Like you’re just a part of it…

‘They don’t even care you’re in a wheelchair. They don’t give a s**t. Sorry to swear/

‘It’s special. It’s so nice. It’s like that everywhere. I never thought that would happen, like it’s cool. It’s really cool.

‘There’s a legend of the sport getting around wheelchair tennis. If it’s good enough for someone like that, it’s good enough for everyone. Sorry I didn’t mean to cry.’

Despite Alcott falling to a 7-5, 6-0 defeat to Schroder in the last match of his career, an unforgettable week for the Aussie also saw him named 2022 Australian of the Year.

The tennis legend is a keen disability advocate and described himself as the ‘luckiest guy in the world’ upon playing his last match.
