"Ten Hag might have another solution" - Transfer insider drops big Man Utd verdict on £55m star

Manchester United target Pau Torres may not be that much better than Victor Lindelof, fears journalist Dean Jones.

The Villarreal defender has been heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford, but Jones is not too sure if he is Erik ten Hag’s first-choice centre-back target.

According to 90min, Ten Hag has given United the green light to sign Torres this summer as the Dutchman looks to improve the team’s defence.

However, there could be a sticking point, with the same outlet claiming that the Manchester club are keen to pay £45m rather than activate the Spaniard’s £55m release clause.

It would not be a surprise to see Villarreal demand for Torres’ release clause to be paid, with the 25-year-old having been such a key player for them during the 2021/22 season.

In total, he made 47 appearances in all competitions, helping Unai Emery’s side to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League and record a seventh-placed finish in La Liga.

Jones has his doubts over Torres’ ability to significantly improve this United side at the back.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider said: “I spoke to somebody who said, ‘Would he really be that much better than Lindelof?’ You think of when Lindelof came in, he was supposed to fix that problem.

“He’s a good player, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’d be the solution to United’s problems. That’s why I just wonder whether Ten Hag might have another solution.”

If Ten Hag wants to build from the back at United, which you would expect to be the case given how his Ajax team played, Torres would certainly be a good fit in that regard.
