John Murtough might have to change Erik ten Hag's transfer priority at Manchester United

Manchester United are yet to sign a new player this summer, but the lights in the Old Trafford boardroom have been on.

John Murtough was appointed as United's sporting director last year and he's been given increased responsibility since Richard Arnold succeeded Ed Woodward. Murtough is responsible for United's recruitment and Erik ten Hag can veto any proposed deals.

Arnold talked about the structure of transfers in his chat with supporters at the weekend and said: "Here's the money. John [Murtough], you are the f****** director of football, Erik [Ten Hag] you are the manager, who do you want?". He waved his hands to suggest the process was simple. United might already have their business for the summer done if that was the case.

Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham have all signed players this summer and United seem to be standing still. That's obviously not true, the Manchester Evening News understands United are making progress in talks for Frenkie de Jong, but supporters are naturally concerned. United have just endured their worst season for decades and they need to act in the market.

Ten Hag's priority is De Jong but it's understood the Dutchman wants the midfielder to be one of at least five new signings. Ten Hag also wants to sign Jurrien Timber, Antony, Christian Eriksen, while centre-backs Pau Torres and David Carmo have been shortlisted.

Although it was believed it was Eriksen's preference to remain in London — the city where he was settled for seven years and where he had his firstborn — it was reported on Monday that Tottenham have not followed up their interest in re-signing him.
