Teenager 'lucky to be alive' following Oldham drive-by shooting, detectives say as eight people arrested on suspicion of attempted murder

Eight people have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a teenager seriously hurt in a 'shocking' drive-by shooting carried out in broad daylight. A gunman on an electric bike opened fire on a taxi, with the victim, 18, hit as he was getting out of the car with others.

In an update on Saturday (January 18), Greater Manchester Police said the teenage was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he remained in a 'stable condition'. Detectives said he was 'lucky to be alive' and dubbed the shooting a 'targeted' attack.

The shooting happened at around 12.15pm on Thursday on Shaw Road in the Derker area of Oldham. Armed police swooped on the scene and an air ambulance was scrambled.

Cordons were in place at junction of Shaw Road and Shore Street; Mortimer Street; the junction of Bower Street and Gould Street; and Huddersfield Road.

Now the force has revealed eight arrests have been made. Three juveniles, together with an 18-year-old man and two men aged in their 20s, remain in police custody for questioning. A 19-year-old man and man in his 40s arrested have been released on bail pending further investigations.

All eight were held on suspicion of attempted murder.

Greater Manchester Police initially said the victim was 19, but that has been clarified to confirm he is 18. The gunman was also initially said to have been on a motorbike, but the force has now said they were on an electric bike.

"Since the incident, officers from our Oldham district and our Major Incident Team have arrested eight males, all on suspicion of attempted murder," said the update on Saturday.
